India to manufacture all mobile phone parts, including chips

India is moving rapidly toward complete self-reliance in mobile phone manufacturing as Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced on Saturday that the country will soon manufacture every component of mobile phones, including semiconductor chips. Speaking at the inauguration of India’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility for mobile devices in Noida, Vaishnaw declared that India aims to build “global-scale capabilities” and position itself as a world player in electronics manufacturing.

The minister revealed that a Made in India chip is expected to roll out soon, marking a major milestone in the country’s journey toward technological independence. This announcement comes on the heels of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Independence Day promise that India’s first fully made-in-India semiconductor chips would hit the market by the end of 2025

Semiconductor Manufacturing Gains Momentum

India’s semiconductor ambitions are materializing with the recent inauguration of CG Semi’s pilot line at its outsourced semiconductor assembly and testing facility in Gujarat’s Sanand. The facility, set up with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore in partnership with Renesas Electronics America and Stars Microelectronics, will produce 500,000 chips per day initially. At full capacity, the plant will manufacture 15 million chips daily for consumer, industrial, automotive and power applications.

The government has approved ten semiconductor projects across six states under the India Semiconductor Mission, attracting total investments of Rs 1.60 lakh crore. Four additional projects worth Rs 4,600 crore were approved in August 2025, located in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. These facilities are expected to generate employment for over 2,000 skilled professionals.

Electronics Manufacturing Transformation

India’s electronics manufacturing sector has witnessed remarkable growth, expanding six-fold over the past 11 years to reach a production value of Rs 11.5 lakh crore. Electronics exports have surged eight-fold from Rs 38,000 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 3.27 lakh crore in 2024-25. The first quarter of 2025-26 alone saw electronics exports jump 47% to $12.4 billion.

The mobile phone manufacturing success story is particularly striking. India has transformed from producing only 26% of mobile phones sold domestically in 2014-15 to manufacturing 99.2% today. Mobile phone exports increased 127-fold from Rs 1,500 crore in 2014-15 to Rs 2 lakh crore in 2024-25. The country now operates over 300 mobile manufacturing facilities, making it the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer.

Component Manufacturing Expansion

The new tempered glass facility inaugurated by Vaishnaw represents another step toward complete supply chain localization. Set up by Optiemus Electronics in collaboration with US-based Corning, the facility will produce 25 million units annually in its first phase, scaling to 200 million units with additional investment of Rs 800 crore. Vaishnaw also announced that Corning would begin manufacturing cover glass for mobile phones at its Chennai plant by December.

The minister highlighted that an IIT Madras-incubated startup has designed India’s first microcontroller, which will soon be deployed in Indian products. This demonstrates India’s growing design capabilities across the electronics ecosystem.

India’s ambitious vision of manufacturing every mobile phone component, from chips to cover glasses, reflects the government’s determined push for technological self-reliance. With semiconductor production beginning commercially and the electronics sector generating 2.5 million jobs while posting record export figures, the country appears well-positioned to achieve its Atmanirbhar Bharat goals in this critical technology sector.
